What’s on in Wonderful Wiltshire

Steeped in ancient history the South West of England is filled with sweeping viewpoints, charming villages and an abundance of wildlife. Spanning over 3,500km, the country of Wiltshire is full of diversity with mediaeval towns and  stunning countryside. Widely recognised as the birthplace of the World Heritage site, Stonehenge, Wiltshire is built amongst the rich archaeological remnants of many ancient civilizations.

Bursting at the seams with history and culture, the county has been put on the map for its historical attractions such as Salisbury Cathedral (home to the infamous Magna Carta);the Old Sarum castle ruins; Avebury stone circle; and plenty of breathtaking National Trust properties, including the grand Mompesson House where many period dramas, including Sense and Sensibility, have been filmed, alongside opulent Stourhead, currently celebrating 300 years. On the culture side of things, its award-winning theatres, the infamous 800 year old market, and art galleries manned by local artisans are all highlights. For those who enjoy adventure and thrills, Wiltshire’s countryside offers a vast array of pulse racing activities - from skydiving to, racing at Salisbury Racecourse, and hot air ballooning across winding river valleys. Embark on a safari escape at Longleat Safari Park or go in search of the elusive Great Bustard bird, one of the world’s heaviest flying animals, with The Great Bustard Group who run onsite wildlife tours.

For avid nature lovers, enjoy long rambles across muddy fields and winding public footpaths, with some leading directly to the charming new local pub with rooms, The Great Bustard. A brilliant base from which to explore the local area; relax in one of the comfortable rooms, or  indulge in a hearty lunch, with specials from Head Chef Jordan Taylor including woodfired pizzas, next-level roasts and innovative small plates. Situated directly opposite the famous Hampshire Avon - the pub is also a great spot for those on the move, with takeaway pints, pastries and coffees from the on-site farm shop. Renowned for its conservation efforts in re-introducing the majestic Great Bustard to the UK, largely due to the work of local charity The Great Bustard Group, the surrounding area is great for bird watching, with kites, kestrels and owls.
